Khoury College Policy for Counting Courses 

This policy applies exclusively to graduate courses taken and counted toward a completed degree program at Northeastern University. It specifically addresses the conditions under which credits from a previously completed program may be  double counted toward a Khoury master’s degree. 

Admissions 

Students who have already completed a Khoury master's degree and are applying for admission to another Khoury master’s degree are advised that an applicant will not be eligible for admission if they have completed 50% or more of the courses in the master’s program to which they are applying to as part of a previously completed master’s program.

Double Counting Graduate Credits   

Students are required to follow their Khoury degree program curriculum as stated in the graduate catalog for their year of enrollment.  

If students completed a degree at Northeastern, completed graduate-level Khoury courses as part of that degree program, and are now enrolled in a new master's degree program at Khoury, they may be allowed to double count courses that were taken as part of the completed program.  

The following restrictions apply to such cases: 

  1. Only courses that are eligible to be counted as part of the new program will be considered for double counting.  
  2. The total number of credits that are double counted shall not exceed 40% of the total credits for the new program. As an example, up to 12 credits worth of courses would be counted into a program of 32 credits.   
  3. Eligible course credits earned in the completed program are valid for a maximum of seven years unless the relevant graduate office grants an extension.  

Additional courses in the new Khoury program may be waived if they were taken before (beyond the 40% limit above), but credits will not be transferred. Program directors, in consultation with faculty and advisors, will determine these waivers on a per-case basis. 

Transfer Credit Policy 

Transfer credits from other institutions (or courses within the university not included in the new master’s program) will continue to be considered for transfer in accordance with the university and Khoury College transfer credit policies.
